Mattersey Primary School

Welcome

Welcome to the Mattersey Primary School website

I hope that you will find that this website useful as an introduction to Mattersey Primary School .

We are very proud of our school, which plays a central role in the small, rural village of Mattersey . Our children also come from the village of Mattersey Thorpe , which is half a mile away as well as other surrounding areas. Many parents transport their children here from areas that are well out of our catchment because they like the ethos, values and “feel” of the school.

We can offer full day care to children from the term in which they are 3. This care is shared between our excellent pre-school and early years group who deliver the Foundation curriculum through the Early Learning Goals. Children are also offered a hot school lunch with a choice of menu which is prepared by our own cook on site. We have a busy after school club, called The Fun Club which offers care from the end of school until 6-00pm, for busy, working parents and a breakfast club which is open from 8:00am each morning.

Our allocated admittance figure is 16 children per year. This ensures that our school remains quite small, retaining a “family feel” which is very important to fostering the ethos of caring and respect that we believe so strongly in. We currently have some vacancies in most year groups.

Our vision here at Mattersey Primary School is to enable every child to aspire to reach their full potential. We are working very hard as a team, in partnership with parents to raise academic standards in the core subjects of English, maths and science.

The school underwent an exceptionally successful OFSTED inspection in July 07, being judged

“A good school with some outstanding features”

Full copies of the report are available from the school or by accessing the OFSTED website.

In 2007 the school's Year 6 SATs were not published nationally as the year group had less than ten pupils. However, we are delighted to report that 100% of those pupils achieved level 4 and above in maths and science and only one pupil did not achieve this level in English as he did not sit the test.

We also believe that every child should have the opportunity to access as many different experiences as possible in these formative years in order to help them make informed choices in later life and to find their gifts and talents. To this end our curriculum is broad and balanced. The academic year includes musical productions, visits to places such as Gainsborough Old Hall and Magna science museum to enhance the curriculum and visitors to school including story tellers and theatre companies.

As part of the school's commitment to developing healthy lifestyles all pupils participate in at least two hours P.E. each week. This includes a weekly lesson delivered by a specialist coach. This year all pupils will be taught the skills of athletics, basketball and tennis by qualified coached as well as having swimming tuition at Retford Leisure Centre for one term and participating in professionally delivered dance workshops for 8 weeks.

We are committed to encouraging our pupils to be good citizens and to lead a healthy life style.

Personal and social development is a great strength of our school. The children are caring towards each other, enjoy working together and helping each other and are good at resolving their own problems. Our buddying system enables children to have a close friend who supports them in assembly and at playtimes. These buddies are often the first contact when a child is upset. All further concerns are treated by the staff quickly and fairly to prevent small situations from becoming big worries. Our children are very happy to be here and this is reflected in our excellent attendance figures.

Our mission statement and school rules both emphasise the importance of respect and responsibility and these are key words in our school.

If you would like any further information or wish to visit the school, please do not hesitate to contact us.
